video I’m means you talking about how to proofread your own work now this is probably one of the most crucial aspects of writing anything any bit of writing that you have to do as a student or even just writing an email has to be proof read and I actually have my pieces here so this is my this is my thesis and it is very thick as you can see it is I think it’s 200 and yeah 215 pages long and I proof read this I’m also a professional proof reader i proofread freelance I have a small consultancy business where I proofread and I help you guys with getting into universities and preparing for your viber pairing for interviews writing CVS and all the links all the information is down below I’ve never really plugged it in a video but I get requests every single day and that’s absolutely amazing my prices are you depend on what it is that you are requesting so if you’re asking for proofreading they’re just kind of basic just English proofreading then that’s obviously basically bit cheaper than really academic proofreading where I kind of change the sentences as well and I recently proved in a poster proof of cover letters and a few of you have got into your PhD programs after I to hire a proofreader and that’s totally okay I wanted to give you my top I think I have 11 points yes my top 11 points for how to proofread your own work before I get into the tips I just wanted to say that make sure that you leave time to proofread so if your work is due in on Monday make sure that you’ve given yourself at least three to four days to actually proofread this process can be very monotonous very boring very tiresome cumbersome but it is I would say one of the most important parts of writing anything so he depends on how long your work is something like my thesis I I think I gave it about two weeks of proof food because it’s quite a large bit so the first thing I do and this is a very quick automatic thing is just to run a spell check and grammar check just from where taste sure that your your settings are on the language settings that you desire so obviously I always choose UK English and and annoyingly it always goes back to US English American Spelling’s and British Spelling’s for certain words are very different like S&Z; for example internalized or organized it’s spelt very differently and if you’re submitting work in the UK and it’s written in some American spending some English spelling and it’s not consistent that does look really unfair my second tip that I really think is underrated is to edit backwards so don’t start editing from the introduction and go towards the end and the conclusion start from the conclusion and go up towards the beginning we tend to read the beginning parts not all the time and then what happens is the end starts become a bit sloppy because by the time you’ve gotten there you’re probably quite tired from reading this essay a thousand times so start from the back start right at the bottom edit from there and go up towards the introduction my set tip is to read out loud to vocalize your word it’s the number of times the number of times I’m sitting with someone I’m true to me while we’re helping someone out and I ask them to read the sentence to me out loud and they read it and then they say oh there’s a mistake this is offs that I’ve asked them to check it two or three times when I ask them to read out loud it shows them their mistake to try to give every single word a purpose and say every single word on purpose I think nobody helps to ensure that your sentences makes sense it’s very easy to write instances that don’t really make sense and since a few would necessarily say in that structure so definitely sing out loud and vocalizing your work gives you a nice way of just checking that it makes sense my fourth tip is to give you a work to somebody else now this is probably a tip that you’ve heard before but definitely give you a work for someone else it could be anyone to be someone in that field it can be anybody proofreading is less about the content but more about the format and the English and the structure and the sentences and paragraphs so giving away that someone else just allows them to pick out mistakes that you may not have seen yourself our brains are so used to filling in the gaps I’m sure you guys have seen those sentences where though the letters are all jumbled up our brains try to figure things out for us to help us the fifth tip that I would say is to print your work outs usually print mine two pages on one so just to save paper especially with this thesis so with this thesis I actually printed six pages on one my mistake is because you know it’s not possible other ways to end up with something I can if you don’t walk around with but I printed them out I printed out in different sections so I did the method section and then I did the introduction and the results etc and I kind of edited it as I went along bring it on paper means that you can edit on the go so I used to edit on the tube and I was on my way to University or edit on a plane I was traveling before you know during submission time and or I would you know give that work someone else to edit it kind of gives me the flexibility to edits wherever also I find that it’s much easier to spot mistakes when it’s on paper on the screen it’s very easy to kind of just skim over things it’s also a nice way of giving yourself a little break from a computer screen you’re not supposed to look at a screen for too many hours in the day and I think a lot of us do so just by pressing it out it means that you’ll still be productive if still getting some work done and but it just means that you’re off screen and you can kind of just focus on this piece of paper and sort of the sixth thing I do generally is to look at sentence length now if a sentence is more than I would say two and a half lines I question it I think especially when you’re writing information that’s already quite heavy in terms of content you don’t want to pack in too many points in one sentence so what I would recommend you to do is any sentence that’s more than two and a half or three lines on an on a word document I would say to cut it in half even if you feel like it’s the same point cut it in half it does make it easy to read where the sentences are shorter longer sentences generally are quite messy and are also not very concise they’re not to the points the seventh tip I’d give is editing in bulk now I sometimes noticed that there are words that are misspelled or words that are not capitalized but should be capitalized like company names or names of people or major three agents maybe something that’s just generally capitalized some abbreviations have an uppercase letter and a lowercase letter and I noticed that we noticed that when I first writing but I notice it later on and imagine trying to go through a thesis that long and copying and changing every single word of that word if you’re gonna miss something so why generally tend to do is select ctrl and s so find a word I’ll select the word that I am looking for and then I would save a place with and love with the correct word there and I’ll say replace all so what that does is it replaces every single word in the document that is a mistake now this has been a lifesaver for me and I used it so much just genuinely think I even use it now when I’m writing anything or when I’m walking your work but I notice that there’s a work that has been not capitalized or not spelled correctly I just say to myself the chances are they’ve spelt this incorrectly throughout the thesis or throughout this essay and I correct every single one the a thing I do is check for consistency you might be taught to write with a certain font or some font size or spacing in between you see I wanted a spacing of 1.5 in between each line and this helps the the examiner to write kind of points or kind of feedback in between a lot of the time when I proofread your work I always ask you to send me a link to either online an online document that has formatting on it or some sort of marks beam and I like to just double check because otherwise it you know every every University every course has a different formatting expectation so when I do that academic proofreading which is pretty much for all of you guys to I always check the marks even kind of tell you oh you’re missing this out this needs to be corrected you know work on this the nice thing I do is check for common mistakes so common words that are usually spelled wrong like there and they are your and you are it’s and it’s his effects and effects it doesn’t matter how great your English is those words are just misspelled sometimes I I commonly misspelled weather and weather with a H what I do is when I go through the when I go through and proofread I just check those words just to make sure that it’s okay and throughout the essay not just in one place I really make sure to check it properly because that is one mistake that you do not want the test thing I do is proofread every single version so this is something that obviously I I don’t do when I proofing in your work because I get the last version but for you if you’re proofreading your own work makes sure that you proofread every single version let’s say you were to rewrite a section or a paragraph proofread the whole thing again make sure it makes sense you’ve got nothing to lose by proofreading ‘taking you work you only increase the probability that you find the mistakes and you can improve on them so I would say check as many times as you can eat the only time I say not to check is after it’s printed so when I printed this out so I printed four of these each one cost about I think was like 35 or 40 pounds yeah very expensive when I printed this out I refused to look at it because I knew that as soon as I opened it up I was going to find a mistake so and at this point what this abound it’s not going to change and I’m just gonna think about it so I would say there’s a point at which just accept there’s no change and just make sure that you’ve saved a version of the original you say you keep on saving as you go the last if I do is I always check facts and that’s something that you should do diligently check your facts let’s make sure that any figures that you use are correct make sure that any numbers use you quotes are correct make sure your references are correct as well the people the names of the authors should be correct as well make sure your abbreviations are correct make sure that if you let’s say you’ve done an experiment and using the region make sure that you’ve given them correct information work looks sloppy when it’s incorrect when it’s inaccurate I mean it’s not referenced what I tend to do and I think this is very useful my do this all the time in your work because obviously I don’t know everything I don’t know the names of everything and so what I tend to do is I will go on google and I’ll just search for the name so let’s say it’s a law let’s say for example Newton’s law for example and let’s say I do not know whether the N and the L should be capitalized I just do it and I look on a few papers a few published papers to see what they have done if they’ve capitalized it then I’ll come fertilize it if they haven’t that I won’t I know that’s going to be correct because nature publications for example have their own editor so if they’re professional editors have written it as a capital then I know that it’s going to be present it’s going to capitalized so that’s the end of the video I really hope that you gain some insight on how I proofread and how I recommend you guys to prove for you don’t get that perfection is pretty much impossible no matter how much I go through my work there will be probably be a mistake at the end of it especially something as long as a thesis just be okay with 99% perfection and don’t forget to welcome to my college coaches video coaching series my name is Sarah and I’ll be your coach today for essays and personal statements 101 in this session we’ll discuss the purpose of a college essay and we’ll go over how you choose an opening and a fee to get your essay started we’ll talk about the organization of your essay and how you should put it together we’ll also go over two critical acceptances that should be in every single essay that you write we’ll talk about how you should go about polishing your essays that you avoid any typos and then we’ll go over a couple of sort of pitfalls to avoid so what’s the purpose of a college essay again like everything else recommendation letters short answers resume its context for a set of your accomplishments it’s not supposed to be about all of your accomplishments it’s not your resume in paragraph form but your essay is supposed to be one statement about one set of your accomplishments and how they look to the future it’s a look into your personality because of course when you’re writing one or two pages some of you should be in that work it’s not cold 12 point Times New Roman font resume that just lists the facts and the dates this is sentences and structure they’re supposed to convey something about you again it’s a chance to distinguish yourself it’s another opportunity from you to stand out from the pool of other applicants it’s also interestingly enough and this is definitely unlike your application an opportunity to explain some of your future goals where you see yourself in ten years it’s a nice part of the essay that shows that you’ve thought about why you want to go to college and why this college in particular and that’s another thing about a well-written college essay you want to be able to show that you did your research and that you understand why this particular college that you’re applying to is a good fit and how you would be able to contribute back to the school and make it bigger and better place the college essay can also when used carefully be a good to explain shortcomings such as a bad grade an incident at school or something else that you seem to need to explain that maybe isn’t as appropriately done in a recommendation letter the ideal essay is one or two pages single-spaced a lot of times it says minimum 500 words it leaves with a unique gripping opener you’re always told in short essays and short stories that you need to grab your audience’s attention the college essay is no different there needs to be something unique something that they just haven’t heard before right at the very beginning however you don’t want to just lead with a bang and then sort of end with a whimper you need to use that momentum to tell one cohesive story that reflects on the past your accomplishments and what you’ve done through high school and then looks into the future what you want to do with this particular school and what you want to do potentially with the rest of your life and it explains why this school and potentially why this program like a major or something you want this essay to be one story that leads from beginning to end is easily read and is well received so how do you go about choosing an opening in a theme well first you have to take a look as to see whether you have to write a prompted or an open essay prompted essays or something that will say something to the effect of write about an experience in your life where you’ve had to face a challenge and how you overcame it open essays are just that you get to write about whatever you’d like obviously if you have a prompted essay you need to do as you’re told you need to make the essay fit the prompt if it’s open you can be slightly more creative when you’re thinking about your opening you should try to in your head link a past anecdote from your life to a future goal for example I’m a lawyer I always wanted to be a lawyer my father’s a lawyer and so every day we need come home from work my brother and I would run to the top of the and jump into his arms he was always wearing a trench coat and a big brown floppy hat I would steal the brown floppy hat from him and put it on my own little head and look at my daddy and say daddy did you put any bad guys in jail today from that particular story I was able to move on and talk about how law had always been of interest to be how I followed my father’s career and then in high school joined the mock trial and Youth Court teams and then how I hope to you know go to college do the same study the law and then go on to be a district attorney myself you can see how you take that interesting first story link it to things you’ve done in the past and what you hope to do in the future now you’re actually going to craft your first paragraph first sometimes you just don’t do this sometimes you wait till the end do your first paragraph because you don’t know where your story’s going to go but this story you need to start with your paragraph right up front and you need to get it perfect because until you are comfortable until you’re happy with that first opening paragraph the rest of the essay is just going to seem boring you’re not going to be able to weave a theme through it and you’re not going to be able to get it to do what you’d like and that’s what you have to do you have to take that story and identify a theme that you can weave through the rest of the essay like in my example just now it was the law it was my father as a lawyer how I wanted to be a lawyer and how the law had always sort of had some part and parcel of my life another story that I helped another student write was about their family store how the family’s store had always been the heart and soul of the family how as a child that student had worked at the store how the student had gotten to know customer service and the ins and outs of the business and how that student hopes to go to a business school majoring business open his own business and go on to be an entrepreneur like his father you can see how the whole story weaves itself together but could start with something as silly as a customer interaction story at the beginning that sort of gives some color to the essay once you get that first paragraph down that is the absolute hardest thing to do another three or four paragraphs that you’re going to write are pretty simple we’ve got this map up here to take a look of the other three to four paragraphs that you could write the second paragraph needs a transition you need to get from that opening story to something about you you can do this as part of the third paragraph and merge numbers two and three but you need to get from that story particularly if it’s about something that happened to you or something about somebody else and you need to get it back to you as a person and what you’ve done so you kind of have to talk about who you are in relation to your opening your past achievements how that story deals with you and is important to you because in your fourth paragraph you’re going to transition and talk about the future why that particular trait why that particular theme is going to continue in your life what you want to be what you want to become a hobby that you want to keep in your life say if you’re writing about volunteerism how you hope to say work with Big Brothers and Big Sisters and do that in the future that’s the sort of thing you need to talk about as it moves to the future the fifth paragraph is essential but actually not too hard to write you need to write in your final closing paragraph how the specific college you’re applying to will help get you to your future goals and that is when we talk about two critical sentences that need to be in at least one essay that you submit to every single college it takes a little research but here we go so for each school you’re considering do your research so that you can fill out the bottom two sentences and include them in your essay you see this on your screen at name of the school I would hope to study X by majoring X so that I could explore my interest in Y and possibly one day pursue rear as a I believe that this school is an ideal place for me to study this because of XY and Z these two sentences should be in the fifth paragraph of the essay that we’ve just outlined now why are these sentences important this is where you prove to the admissions people that you’re serious about their school this is where you show that you’ve done the research that you know why you want to go to this school and why it would be good for you and what would make it good for them to have you there it’s a critical part of the essay that far too many students forget and done well it’s pretty much the knockout punch of your essay once you get dropped down you need to polish to a high gloss make sure that you put your paper together so that it’s an easy to read font:arial Times New Roman Garamond those types of fonts nothing crazy 12.1 inch margins again sort of like with the resume no trying to sneak extra words in just so you get it all on one page make it easy to read once you get it down read it out loud slowly with a pencil in hand you’d be amazed how many times you miss things when you’re proofreading just because you’ve read it that many times to yourself by speaking something out loud you find the trouble spots you find the things that just don’t sound right and as long as you’ve got a pencil right there and ready to go you can Circle it so that you can go back to it and try to fix it once you’ve done your own self editing you really need to hand it over to some teachers and counselors for them to review maybe you don’t take their suggestions and content but make sure you have a clean draft that grammar is sound and that your point gets across the last thing you want would be a typo or a sentence that just doesn’t make sense nothing would be worse than you sending out ten copies of this say to all of you different colleges with some glaring error in it that you really should have been able to catch some things to avoid when you’re writing your essay essays that are about somebody else and not you now you’re in state wait a minute you just told me that you wrote your college essay about your father I wrote the first paragraph about him and about me and everything else was about me and that’s how you can do it college admissions people hate when someone writes an essay all about their hero oftentimes a parent because the college essay isn’t supposed to be about somebody else it’s about you it’s supposed to be giving context and clarity and details and personality to the resume and application in front of them it needs to be all about you another thing they can’t stand and you probably couldn’t either is some cliche like the big game the big football game the winning pass the score of the state finals wha-hoo been done before in many essays and many movies do something more creative it’s in you you can find it even if the big game is really a big game even if you won Olympic gold I’m sure you can find something else to write about so that it doesn’t quite sound like the big game essay next make sure that when you read your essay it doesn’t sound like you just took your resume and put paragraphs behind each bullet this is not about trying to cram every accomplishment you’ve ever had into your essay your essay should focus on one story about you one story one part of your personality one thing you’d like to achieve in the future it’s one part just like each recommendation letter you’re going to have written for you is one part of your application and finally try not to write about something that happened to you if you don’t also write about what you did in response for example say god forbid when you were a child you have leukemia it can be a fantastic essay to write as long as you don’t focus on everything that happened to you you’ve got to make it about what you did to it what you responded with the strength the courage the fight how you became a better person because of it and what it inspires you to want to do in the future again sort of along the lines of not what just happened to you you can’t spend the whole essay in the past it has to be forward-looking you’re asking someone to admit you to their school so that they can teach you give you an education and send you out into the world it’s that send you out into the world part you need to have in your college essay as something you want and understand and are ready to embrace I hope this here’s your talk what qualities do you think make up a good employer write an essay that identifies the qualities you think a good employer has give you specific examples to back up your ideas almost people here it is like before you jump into it what do I do here’s my essay can I just pull out the line paper and start writing what do I do right story yeah I want a to have a piece of scrap paper and I want to start brainstorming because I got organize my ideas now the essay is going to take me about 45 minutes that’s all I’ve got start to finish how long do I want to plan for that prewriting figure out what I’m going to say how long can I afford to take to make my plan now it’s closer to five you’ve only about 45 minutes total and you’ve got a long way to go to write the actual essay I want to take more than maybe five minutes to sort of organize your thoughts plan out what you’re going to say so let’s start with brainstorming here’s the idea good employer you’ve had good employers you’ve had bad employers read about them see them on TV what’s a good employer give me all kinds of ideas with honesty honestly it’s gonna start right now everything we could get honesty yes well what do I wanna know about it to column that company be okay um on Kennedy so the company only opened up last week maybe that’s not a very good employer okay all right sure what else you know this you’re going through the want ads you’re thinking about applying someplace looking for a job or a better job what are you looking for what matters to you when you could have tables so you have that oh right yeah we got benefits you want to be honest good pay good pay sorry fair salary good or fair salary let’s go okay what else we care about oh is it a company of integrity oh that time is with honesty so integrity what else if I be able to step up in advancement over can you move up or you’ll be stuck in the same job forever year after year okay advance man I like that feel like we’re running out of ideas just I’m sort of slowing down yeah time to move on you don’t want to spend too long on this because you don’t have time for it as soon as you start kind of hitting a wall like okay good pay good benefits and you can’t think of anything else you got plenty to pick from here this is more than enough how many details do I actually need for the GED essay 3 3 I got to decide I have to prioritize which three am I gonna pick I want to pick my favorite three maybe what’s going to help me decide which of the three are the best ones to go for how do I know yes exactly the ones I’ve got a lot to talk about the ones I can think of the most information I’m going to get a nice beefy paragraph out of it so let’s pick our best three you guys tell me what do you think of the ones we have a lot to say about we’re going to be able to write a good essay about benefits and if it’s okay I’ll give you that what else sorry salaries import’ good fair salary what else sorry wish your life advancement comfort uh advancement which is opportunity opportunity okay so these are the three I’m gonna go with yes okay what do I do now vision week we’re going to talk to you first yeah I got a word of these what what order makes sense to talk about it what am I going to talk about first what am I going to talk about second where am I going to talk about third so where should I start good man offense because when you talk to an employer about salary it kind of spoke someone okay okay so it’s a little tip I was on that I’m going to save that one then if it’s first and then I would go with the salary second so benefits is first salary is second Oh make me wait it normal you tell me big salary advancement advancement and then salary glass okay sound relax we’re going to handle just like an interview I thought of everything I could figure out what my best three were decided what order I’m going to talk about him in what’s my last step before I actually take the live paper and start working I want to get organized I want to get all my ideas down on paper because if I don’t organize it now while I’m thinking of all this I’m going to forget where I was going with it I’m going to get to the paragraph about salary and I’ve completely forgotten what I was going to say and then having writer’s block in the middle of the exam that’s tough don’t want to do that what do I want to say about benefits what are important that why don’t you share health insurance if you have families are there covered you’re covered how much are you covered co-payments I care about health insurance does it feel like I’m kind of running out of stuff now like I’ve got some details okay then I’m done what I need to make sure I do is maximize the time I’ve got it’s 45 minutes start to finish I cannot write an entire essay start to finish in 45 minutes unless I’ve got a plan and I can’t write it and then fix all the little mistakes there’s no time to draft right I can’t write a nice pretty version fix everything and then recopy it because I want at a time so this way I sit down I look at my whole topic qualities that make a good employer a brainstorm everything I can think of come up with a pretty good list pick my best three the ones I’ve got a lot to say about figure out what order I’m going to talk about them in what would make sense and I like Roberto’s idea because salary usually comes up in an interview so it kind of makes sense to touch on this last then I just want to jot down all the stuff I can think of now so I don’t get writer’s block when I get halfway through my essay so let’s pretend we took about five minutes for that takes longer when it’s all of us working together but let’s just pretend this is about five minutes got my plan all worked out on scrap paper I’m ready where I start now you’re going to repeat you’re going to repeat the question repeat the question this is my writing prompt this is what they told me to write about so when I start off the very first sentence in my essay is my topic sentence I want to tell them right away what it is I’m going to talk about well here it is they told me right turn that into a statement give me a topic sentence where I take that and tell the writer what it is I’m about to write about Oh many people have many different opinions of quato of whatever what qualities an employee should have yeah oh and I feel that there’s two things that I know for an employer what I want you to ‘full I want to take this prompt and turn it into a topic sentence you know lots of people have varying opinions on what qualities would make a good inferior but I have a top three perfect so here’s my introduction paragraph I got my topic sentence awesome now what do I do she’s a topic sentence we just gave me my topic since I said now we now we used to write the three things that now I have to explain what ferdi they are no matter what order I do it in uh-huh yes yeah yeah we did with the order I decided right away I gave you that topic sentence yeah so now you in the topic sentence also you want to come get into introduction of where you headed what are the three things that you feel that are important exactly and that’s what we’re about to get when you give introduction into the body yes exactly because the introduction is like a small version of what the whole essay looks like start off explaining what I want to talk about I talk about my examples I give my three details and then I want to wrap it up with a conclusion it’s exactly like the whole essay starts with an introduction covers the three body paragraphs cover each one of my details and then I wrap it up with a conclusion it’s exactly the same thing okay so I’ve got my topic sentence down now I need to work through my details so give me a sentence where I introduce this idea this is one of the things I think is important so what do I say first the first thing that I feel is important on the benefits perfect first thing I think is important about a good employer are the benefits they offer you have a sense and you touch this one now second would be the advanced program sure and then the third would be one of the things what are they paying me awesome okay so that’s my introduction I’ve repeated back the prompt I have a topic sentence I covered each one of these details I need a conclusion how do I wrap this up so these these are the top qualities that I look for in an employer before I can make a decision on deciding whether or not I want to spend my years working and going for this confident beautiful it’s basically just like the topic sentence I just want to use different words so these are the qualities that I look for when I’m trying to make it about whether this is a good employer to work for perfect done with my introduction what’s next first topic first topic I need a body paragraph that’s going to be all about this this is everything that I wrote about already I’ve got all my ideas down so now I just need to start working this into a paragraph so how do I start I need a topic sentence for this topic good employer or company is important that they cover some of my health insurance and give me a proficient don’t want too far in the introduction but that’s perfect I want to just lay the groundwork what I’m about to talk about say what you’re going to talk about talk about it tell them what you just finished saying okay it really is a little repetitive but that’s academic writing I need a conclusion sentence I just finished talking about all the different kinds of benefits but I can’t just walk away from this paragraph I need a conclusion sentence that looks just like the introduction wraps it back up so good company or employees who offers the good amenities covering or covering all the amenities that I need perfect good lawyer is going to be a company that offers all these kind of benefits because this is what I need I’m going to pause you right there to say this is in the prompt right good employer can I just keep saying good the whole time a good employer offering it with benefits yes they’re good yeah I got to start working in some new vocabulary here I can’t use the word good 15 times in my essay or I’m going to start to lose points on that word choice category so what else could I say I love the conclusion sentence but give me another word other than good so fair employer perfect a fair employer is one who offers this reasonable that’s a good one to keep working in that good vocabulary cuz you got to make sure you’re mixing it up with okay three body paragraphs down coming in on the end here run into our home now what I need one more thing I need a conclusion what should my conclusion look just like the topic the introduction it’s going to look
